Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Displacement Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and displaced over a million residents.

Officials stated that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, mudslides, and destructive gale-force winds, prompting the evacuation of millions of residents nationwide.

Widespread Damage and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, disaster response teams documented rising waters reaching the tops of houses and residences being swept away by strong flows.

“Our personnel saved fourteen people who were trapped on the roof engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident also called in panic, reporting the roof of his house was about to be ripped off due to the storm. We rescued him along with four family members.”

By Monday, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning on the island and a second individual who died when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The intense storm weakened to a severe tropical storm early Monday while moving over the Philippines’ largest island, where the capital is located.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is expected to lose strength as it moves in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated it was still working to assess damage on buildings and roads.

Roughly 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

Fung-wong struck just days after Typhoon Kalmaegi, which killed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, causing five deaths there.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the 21st typhoon to hit the Philippines in 2025.

Researchers report that the rate of super-typhoons hitting the Philippines has increased by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments suggest that intense storms cause an average of millions in dollars in damage to the country every year.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by Kalmaegi and the expected damage from the new storm.
